A huge welcome from Africa’s Gift.

We hope you find our website informative and that you enjoy browsing; and we would love you to join us in making a difference.

Africa’s Gift supports largely rural communities in southern Africa (principally Lesotho, South Africa, Tanzania, Zambia, and Malawi) and Uganda, working closely with community members to effect change through the development of practical solutions to clearly identified needs.

We also reach out to UK community members who wish to become involved - at home or overseas.

Support our work in Uganda

Africa’s Gift have been supporting the Batwa people in Western Uganda by providing funding for the creation of Marian’s Eden a project named to remember Ken’s mother. This is by using an area of scrubland on the edge of the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to mountain gorillas, which has been terraced and fenced to help create a pocket forest pharmacy.   The pharmacy will be used to grow crops of indigenous plants and herbs that the Batwa believe contain medical qualities.  In addition, there is also room to grow food crops. The Batwa have historically been the custodians of the forest, but now their access is limited by the Ugandan Wildlife Authority.

Every plant is grown for a specific reason and each plant will be used.  Should the Batwa be unable to source all the species required – Africa’s Gift will work with them and the Ugandan Wildlife Authority to see if access to the forest can be granted to harvest the specimens that they require. The scheme is completely community run and has provided a catalyst for the community to work together and to help themselves and others.

Support our work with Heat Retention Cook Bags

Cooking for the poorest community members in the world can be a dangerous and hugely time consuming concern every single day. In addition the need to cut down vegetation to provide fuel to burn, results in devastating soil erosion.

To combat this, we are introducing an amazing invention which transforms lives and nurtures nature. Heat retention cook bags, provides an ingenious solution to these problems and every household should have one.  It is a one pot thermal cooker, that is truly extraordinary and in Africa saves time and uses significantly less fuel which reduces the risk of smoke inhalation. In the Western world cooking with a heat retention bag would not only save you money, it will also help reduce your carbon footprint. A heat retention cook bag saves between 0.5 and 2 tonnes of CO2 each year depending of fuel type used.

Contact us to learn more about how we have introduced this successfully to many communities. Get in touch if you are an organisation trying to conserve habitats, release women in Africa from drudgery, or are working with the fuel poor (home or abroad).
To sponsor a heat retention cook bag here for someone near or far that is struggling to put meals on the table. We are not only working with communities with great need in Africa, but unbelievably in 2020 close to home too!
The impact research with Sheffield Hallam University with users in Africa, had Masters students in tears of joy with the feedback.
